AMRRIC welcomes new CEO Dr Brooke Rankmore

Dr Brooke Rankmore commenced as AMRRIC Chief Executive Officer on February 5th 2018.  Here, Brooke provides some insight on her background and why she's excited to be joining the AMRRIC team.

I am a research Scientist (Ecologist) and have a passion for rural and regional Australia. I began my career with a Bachelor of Science with Honours at the University of New England. This was soon followed by a Doctor of Philosophy at Charles Darwin University, which is how I came to live in the Northern Territory.

Based with the Northern Territory Government, I completed my studies into the impact of land clearing and habitat fragmentation on Top End flora and fauna and worked on various conservation projects for the government. Over this time I travelled extensively across the Top End working on environmental research projects, often in collaboration with Indigenous ranger groups. I then took up a position as Conservation Manager for a large pastoral enterprise, managing natural resources to achieve sustainable production and conservation outcomes. From a focus on pastoral land management I moved to Groote Eylandt working as a Research Scientist with the Anindilyakwa Land and Sea Rangers.

While living on Groote Eylandt I assisted Indigenous organisations with various economic development and environmental projects, which lead to my next position working with Regional Development Australia, Northern Territory (RDANT). During my time at RDANT I worked with not-for-profit organisations, local government and Indigenous corporations to develop projects and secure funding.  I also developed a Grant Writing workshop for not-for-profits, which I delivered to organisations across the Territory.

Moving back to the Conservation sector I took up a role as Director of Conservation with Greening Australia, overseeing all aspects of the organisations Territory operations, before moving into local government as the Manager Environment and Climate Change and later as the Manager Regulatory Services with the City of Darwin. This recent role, as the Manager of Regulatory Services with the City of Darwin, oversaw the Council’s regulation of animal management through by-laws and responsible pet ownership education.

I have been fortunate enough to participate in the Australian Rural Leadership Program, back in 2010 and have held various board and committee positions, currently a Board Director of Territory Natural Resource Management and Sids and Kids, Northern Territory.

I am delighted to be taking up the role of Chief Executive Officer with AMRRIC, leading a small team of dedicated staff. Having lived in the Northern Territory for almost two decades I have followed the work of AMRRIC for many years. While the majority of my work has focused on the conservation of Australia’s Wildlife I am a lover of all animals and have always worked to protect them, be it through conservation and research, improvement of land management practices or direct animal management.
